Medical Visa Details and Application Process

The medical visa permits a maximum stay of 6 months and can also be extended to an accompanying person. It covers a wide range of medical services, from initial checkups to post-treatment recovery.

To apply, foreign patients should consult the list of registered guarantors, such as medical coordinators or travel agencies, available at the end of this document. After selecting a guarantor, patients should request arrangements for the desired medical services.

Required Documentation for Visa Application

The next step involves determining the host medical institution in consultation with the chosen guarantor. Patients will need to obtain a “Certificate from the medical institution about the planned medical services and references from the guarantor,” along with a Medical Treatment Plan if necessary.

When applying for the visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate, foreign patients must submit the following documents:

  • Passport
  • Visa Application Form
  • Photo
  • Certificate from a medical institution about the planned medical services and references from a guarantor
  • Documents proving the foreign patient’s financial situation (e.g., a bank statement)
  • A document proving the foreign patient’s identity
  • Certificate of Eligibility (required for stays longer than 90 days for hospitalization and medical services)
  • Medical Treatment Plan (required for multiple visits to Japan for treatment)

It’s important to note that the specific documents required may vary depending on the applicant’s nationality. Therefore, contacting the Japanese embassy or consulate beforehand is recommended to confirm the necessary documentation.
